Asian
Pacific American Women's Leadership Institute Programs (APAWLI)
APAWLI is unique. It is the only leadership program in the nation
whose mission is to address the specific challenges facing Asian
and Pacific American women as leaders. It is designed to nurture
culturally competent trusteeship within our communities. Two programs
have been designed to accomplish this mission: one is an annual
summit where Asian and Pacific American
women leaders can
gather for the purpose of meeting, sharing and learning from one
another, and the second is the year-long APAWLI Fellowship Program.
Each year, up to 20 Asian and Pacific American women leaders are
selected to participate in the APAWLI Fellowship Program. Three
one-week sessions are scheduled throughout the year in three different
U.S. cities. These sessions weave guest speakers, interactive
activities, readings, and other learning tools into an experience
that provides participants with applicable information, enhanced
skills and an improved understanding of self. Session topics include:
- Leadership theory and concepts
- Personal
leadership styles and strengths
- Contemporary
Asian and Pacific American issues, including economic and political
topics
- Public
policy skills
- Dynamics
of social change
- Communication
skills
- Financial
and economic literacy
- Producing
and directing a viable Community Impact Project
- Management
training
- Organizational
skills, including consensus building, negotiation, and conflict
resolution
- Strategic
planning
- Asian
and Pacific American history and culture
- Special
challenges facing Asian and Pacific American communities
- The
unique role of Asian and Pacific American women leaders in
the fabric of the American community
The cost of the leadership training is $20,000 per person. Of
this amount, $15,500 is paid by foundation, corporate, and individual
contributions. Participants are asked to cover the remaining $4,500
as tuition, but this tuition is based on each Fellow's ability
to pay. As part of the program, each Fellow develops a project
that positively impacts the lives of at least 25 people in her
community.
