Tour of the New Star of India (part 2)
...Part 1 (February, 1999)
image_placeholder Then it's time to enjoy the meal that you've picked out...An advice from one who frequents Indian buffets... take a test drive before deciding on what to eat. Here, I went very easy on the portions, picking up my favorites on my second trip to the buffet bar. Usually I take two trips to the buffet with the strategy mentioned above.

image_placeholder Once you've selected your food and are ready to start, the waiter brings "Nan" (baked handmade bread) out to you to eat with your meal. I found the Nan to be especially fluffy and lightly crispy on the outside here. One of the best I've tasted in an Indian restaurant.

When you've finally settled down, you can then enjoy the food with your friends...

Great location, classy decor, soft soothing lights. Now under new management, The New Star of India is trying to get out of the bad image set up by some of the previous owners. The restaurant features a distinctly north-Indian style of cooking. They serve buffet lunches and dinners; not many Indian restaurants give buffet dinners. The dinner buffet is more expensive than lunch. You can also order from the menu for dinner. There are no dressed-up waiters...just a good clean environment. They offer comfortingly warm Nans, great vegetarian choices, nice tender chicken (not burnt) and do not forget to try spinach butter. The owner is friendly and comes from a family who constructed most of the restaurants in the state. I was surprised to see lamb curry since not many Indians eat lamb. When asked, they do not tailor dishes to your choice. They do rent the restaurant for parties and are part of the 'Dine-in Delivery' network so next time you can just call and have food delivered to your home. Definitely a place to go if some evening you or your spouse is not in a mood to cook or your buddies want to try Indian food.
