The Lion Dance originated in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-906
AD). Legend has it that a Chinese Emperor had a dream in which
a strange looking creature saved his life. After describing the
dream to his ministers, one said that the creature resembled an
animal from the west, a lion. The lion is usually controlled by
2 people: 1 for the head, 1 for the tail. Sometimes a 3rd person
carrying a silk flower ball or wearing a mask of the laughing
Buddha and holding a banana leaf fan leads and teases the lion
into action, adding to the festivities.
There
are Chinese Lion Dance
Performances scheduled during the New Year week.
