On
Sunday morning, May 21, 2000, some 500 students, parents, educators, and
community leaders gathered to honor several leaders for their outstanding
achievements and contributions to the Asian community. The Asian Education
Advisory Council presented its 15th Annual AEAC Awards, recognizing
contributions of parental investment in school, community service, cultural
diversity,
teacher service, professional service, and student achievement.
The
ceremony began with the Honor Guard Posting of Colors, presented by West
High and the singing of the national anthem by Emily Choi. Emily’s brother,
Marcus L. Uee Kwang Choi, a student, performed the anthem on guitar.
The
Reverend Aaron Gray provided opening remarks for the ceremony, stressing
the importance of recognizing students for their achievements, which serves
as motivation for good citizenship and community service.
Dr.
Sidney "Chip" Zullinger emphasized that while popular discussion
centers around negative school topics, it is important to recognize the
bright lights of achievement that outstanding
students are delivering daily.
Peggy
Lore, the master of ceremonies, introduced the guests of honor, the AEAC
selection committee, fundraising committee, and members/associates.
The
audience was then treated with some special entertainment. Marcus L. Uee
Kwang Choi presented an amazing performance on piano of a piece that he
composed. Then the Grupo De Danza Cheltenham gave
a colorful cultural performance of Latin dance.
Ronald
K. Abo, CEO of Abo-Copeland Architecture made an inspiring keynote speech
describing how education has impacted him and how he continues to learn
during his journey through life.
Finally,
the awards were presented to community leaders and students. AsiaXpress.com
won an AEAC Service Recognition award, too!
