I Introduce:
The Vietnamese Elderly Association of Colorado
by Thong D. Nguyen
I have described the loneliness of most elderly Vietnamese in
America in a previous asiaXpress.com article. This is a true situation
for many Vietnamese now living in Colorado.
Fortunately, we have a Vietnamese elderly Association of Colorado
(VEAC). Its address is 615 S. Federal Blvd., suite 103, 105 and
its phone number is (303) 922-3033.
Many elderly Vietnamese have joined this association. This association's
membership is still modest-about 200 people; however, we hope
that it will chronologically increase. This is a non-profit organization
having the guiding principles to reach the goal of social security,
religion, culture, and wholesome, healthy entertainment. The purpose
of the association is to unify all Vietnamese and American Vietnamese
refugees, 50 years old and up, with no discrimination of religion
or sex. The purpose also includes providing spiritual and physical
help to all members, especially to a member having problems, an
accident or a sickness, according to the capacity of the association.
The
association will organize English and Vietnamese classes, the
American citizenship class and also special interesting classes
for elderly people. The VEAC will set up travel opportunities,
picnic outings in public parks, in mountainsides etc. Besides
these activities, the VEAC will also organize many lectures on
health care, social problems, and American or Vietnamese cultural
literature.
The VEAC has a Senior Center at the same address, having all kinds
of magazines, newspapers, TV, VCR etc. for use by elderly people.
The Center also has coffee, tea and cookies ready for refreshment.
The
VEAC warmly invites all Vietnamese elderly people to join the
association to build up solidarity and friendship between the
old Vietnamese refugees while we are far away from home, and also
to dismiss the loneliness which disturbs us everyday.
