~ The Debut (The Philippines, 2000) -- Friday, May 31st, 6:30 PM
This award-winning film is an appealing love story about a high school senior, Ben Mercado (Dante Basco), who is feeling the tension between the glamour of the American culture and the traditions of his ethnic roots. Not surprisingly, the charismatic Filipino American finds a confidante and possible love interest to complicate his life.
Sponsored by the Filipino American Community of Colorado and the Philippine American Society of Colorado. Reception follows the screening.

~ Unloved (Japan, 2001) -- Friday, May 31st, 9:00 PM
A young working woman, content with her modest and carefree lifestyle, must choose between two men of ambition: a high-powered businessman and a guitar-playing courier. The Director, Kunitoshi Manda, hopes the viewer is intrigued by and can identify with the layers of complexity found within each character. Reception precedes the screening.

~ Kurosawa (USA/Japan, 2001) -- Saturday, June 1st, 12:30 PM
A two-hour documentary on the late director, Akira Kurosawa (1910-98), who dominated post-war Japanese cinema. Director Adam Low tries to get beyond the myth and draws a psychological portrait of a very complex man.

~ Daughter from Danang (USA/Vietnam, 2001) -- Saturday, June 1st, 3:00 PM
A dramatic story of Vietnamese-born "Heidi," formerly Hiep, adopted by a single woman in conservative Tennessee, who, later in life, searches for her birth mother. Her complicated and emotional story reveals a painful pilgrimage of misunderstandings and expectations, discovering how wide the chasm of cultural difference can run.

~ The Turandot Project (USA/China, 2001) -- Saturday, June 1st, 5:00 PM
Celebrated filmmaker Allan Miller chronicles an unprecedented cross-cultural collaboration with world-renowned conductor Zubin Mehta and award-winning Chinese film director Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern), who joined forces to produce Puccini's opera Turandot. The staging of Turandot in the Forbidden City of Beijing reveals the back-stage drama and passionate personalities that made the production a triumph. ~ Dance of a Dream (Hong Kong, 2001) -- Saturday, June 1st, 7:00 PM
A dashing smooth-talking dance instructor makes every woman believe that her dreams could come true. A delightful musical romance with Asia's "king of pop," Andy Lau. Reception follows the screening.

~ Asako in Ruby Shoes (Korea, 2001) -- Saturday, June 1st, 9:00 PM
Writer-Director E J-yong ("An Affair, 1998) takes a leap of imagination in a charming, slyly humorous love story between a young man in Seoul and a teen girl in Tokyo as they cross over time and find their emotional aspirations connected in mysterious ways. Sponsored by KoMart. Reception precedes the screening.

~ Siddhartha (USA/India, re-release of the 1972 English-language classic) Sunday, June 2nd, 12:30 PM
Based on the best-selling novel by the Nobel prize winner Herman Hesse, Siddhartha is a story of a young Brahmin and his search for a meaningful way of life. The secret is found through inner experience. Filmed entirely on location in Northern India, the film is a ravishing visual experience and celebrates the 125th anniversary of Hesse's birth with brand new 35mm prints from the restored negative.

~ The Split Horn (USA/Laos, 2001) -- Sunday, June 2nd, 2:30 PM
The chronicle of a Hmong Shaman, Paja Thao, and his family transplanted from the mountains of Laos to Appleton, Wisconsin, revealing the untold experiences of the Hmong American community. Discussion following the film with Yang Chee, President, Lao-Hmong American Coalition. Sponsored by the Asian Roundtable of Colorado.

~ Mirror Image (Taiwan, 2000) -- Sunday, June 2nd, 4:00 PM
A fun, frolicking romantic comedy, directed by Hsiao Ya-chuan, signals a fresh new voice in the Taiwanese cinema. A car accident changes the life of a young man whose lifeline on his left hand was scratched off. Although he is free from the strictures of fate, his life becomes unpredictable and rather complicated.
