Trung Nguyen, Della Phan take titles at 2010 CATA tourney

More than 100 people participated in the fifth annual two-day tennis tournament

ARVADA – After just giving up a combined four games in their six preliminary-round matches, Trung Nguyen went the distance to defeat Chad Tsuda 9-8 to win the Colorado Asian Tennis Association's Men's Singles A title on July 3 at the Arvada Tennis Center.

The two players held serve for the first 10 games until Tsuda – the 2000 and 2001 5A Colorado No. 1 singles state champion – broke Nguyen's serve with his attack. Tsuda's vicious forehand topspin and powerful serves earned him the nickname "Hulk" from many of the younger participants.

Down 6-8, Nguyen battled back with accurate counters and carried his momentum into a tiebreak, and eventually the win.

14-year-old Della Phan defeated 2007 champion Lisa Tran, 9-5, to win her first Women's Singles A title.

In the Men's Singles B division, Alex Ho defeated Tuan Than 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to claim his trophy. Daniel Phan won 9-3 against Josh Caloral in the Men's Singles C bracket. Jennifer Phan beat Chelsea Ho 9-4 to win the Juniors bracket.

The Women's Singles B final was postponed due to an injury. Amanda Phan and Renee Lewis are scheduled to face off on another date.
