ARVADA – In a match between the younger brothers of last year’s Men’s Singles A finalists, Huy Tran outlasted six-time finalist Alex Le 9-7 at the 11th AsiaXpress.com Tennis Tournament on Sept. 6 at the Arvada Tennis Center.

Tran defeated four-time champion Buu Le, while Alex stopped 2008 finalist Vu Tran in the semifinals the day before.

Tran started strong, connecting on his first 14 first serves and mounting a 7-2 lead. But Le rallied back, and cut the score to 7-8. As light rain began to come down, Tran closed out the match, holding his serve on four consecutive points.

“My stretch of losing in finals is over,” Tran said after the match, referring to his losses in the Colorado Asian Tennis Association and Tennis Hope tournaments earlier this year.

Men’s Doubles C finals

In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, James Bui and Andrew Tran narrowly defeated Nick Nguyen and Duke Tran, 9-8 (12-10), for the Men’s Doubles C title.

Bui and Tran held a commanding lead throughout most of the match, but Nguyen and Tran took four straight game and the lead 8-7. On the brink of defeat, Bui and Tran rallied to force a tiebreak.

The momentum swung back and forth as both teams had opportunities to close the other out. In the end, Bui and Tran held strong and won on the 22nd point of the tiebreak.

Men’s Singles B finals

Viet Hua staged a late rally to defeat Tod Nguyen 9-7 to win the Men’s Singles B title.

In a match where the two combined to hold 13 of their 16 games, Hua broke Nguyen in the 12th game to tie the match before breaking him again in the 16th and final game.

In other matches, Loan Cao held off both Joan Cabarrus and 2008 champion Vie Nguyen to win the Women’s Singles A title.

Cao would team up with longtime partner Christina Tran to win the Women’s Doubles A title over Vie Nguyen and Tien Nguyen.

Amanda Phan defeated Nara Shagdar 9-2 in the Women’s Singles B finals match.

Andrew Phan defeated 2008 finalist James Bui 9-2 in the Men’s Singles C finals.

Khoa Tran held off Sarah Nguyen, 9-7, to win the Juniors Singles A title.

Hugo Jimenez and Jay Yoshimura stopped Vu Nguyen and Phuc Nguyen 9-3 for the Men’s Doubles A title. For Yoshimura, this is his third title.

Vinh Luu and Phu Do defeated uncle-and-nephew duo Don and Joe Yoshimura 9-4 for the Men’s Doubles B title.

Huy Tran picked up his second title of the day, teaming up with Leslie Rios to win the Mixed Doubles A title over Andrew Largo and Tien Nguyen.
