DENVER – For one night, the Zen Ultra Lounge wasn’t as peaceful as its name suggests.
Filmmakers shot action sequences for the political action thriller “Serpent Rising” on April 16 at the nightclub near 9th Avenue and Lincoln Street. It was day 14 of the 25-day shoot.
The plot revolves around Paul Thorn – played by Korean-born actor Julian J. Lee – a former government agent who is trying to find a normal life and leave his past behind. When an old partner comes through his door and hands him a disc before dying, Thorn is thrust back into the world he so wants to escape.
“No real specific governments are really mentioned too much, but it kind of implies Asian countries trying to get a hold of our nuclear technology,” said Mark Steven Grove, producer and stunt and special effects coordinator for the movie.
While trying to uncover the contents of disc, Thorn encounters his former military rival Karl Kim – played by Korean actor Choi Min-Soo – a professional killer who quickly becomes his nemesis.
“One is an assassin and the other one used to be,” Grove said. “(Thorn) is trying to breach the stigma of what he used to be – he wants to be something better.”
The film is directed by Lawrence Riggins (“Replicant”) and the cast includes veteran actors John Savage, Richard Moll and Sean Young.
The filmmakers are planning to debut the movie at an international film festival in South Korea this October, Grove said, and release it in theaters across Asia. Here in the states, it’s still unknown whether it will play at theaters or go straight to DVD, he added.
“We’re going to try and premiere it at Pusan (International) Film Festival,” Grove said. “And then after that it just depends on ... the distributors – how do they see it going.”
