A Cup of Joe: Karson's poor choice of words

BOULDER – CU-Boulder Chancellor Bud Peterson and the managing editors at The Campus Press released separate apologies for Max Karson’s column Feb. 20.

Karson’s column titled, “If it’s a war the Asians want…” sparked controversy with many Asian Americans who called it “racist” and “ignorant.”

“On behalf of the University of Colorado at Boulder, I want to apologize to the members of Colorado’s Asian and Asian-American communities,” Peterson said. “ … The column was a poor attempt at social satire laden with offensive references, stereotypes and hateful language.”

The managing editors of The Campus Press offered their own apology.

“(The article) has clearly upset a large segment of our readership,” they wrote, “and for that, we owe it to those who were offended by the article to maintain the highest level of journalistic integrity and sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt by this article.”
