Ever wonder what it would be like to travel into another person's dreams?

Acclaimed director Satoshi Kon (“Millennium Actress,” “Tokyo Godfathers”) explores this question in his latest animated feature, “Paprika.” Kon meshes stunning visuals and a catchy soundtrack with an intricate plot to create a captivating film-going experience.

The story focuses on Atsuko Chiba, a reserved Japanese researcher who works in the field of psychotherapy. Her alter-ego is a “dream detective” named Paprika, who is able to travel into the dream world and help uncover the source of a person’s anxiety. When Chiba's colleague's psychotherapy device – known as the DC-MINI – is stolen and used for harmful purposes, it is up to her two personalities to stop it.

Detective Kogawa Toshimi, right, visits an online bar in "Paprika."

The strength of the movie resides in its interwoven storylines. The backstories Kon creates for his main characters produce a connection with the audience. However, the origin of one of the pivotal characters is not explored. Although it seems like a plot hole that needs to be filled, it ends up lending a mysterious air to the character.

With a film that delves into dreams, visuals need to take a high priority. “Paprika” doesn't disappoint as the film is filled with ocular sensations. Imaginative characters and landscapes illuminate the screen while the fluid animation carries it along.

Electropop artist Susumu Hirasawa, who collaborated with Kon on “Millenium Actress” and “Paranoia Agent,” once again provides the soundtrack for the director. The fast beats, heavily synthesized vocals and rich instrumentals create an airy sound that fits in with the fantastical universe of the film.

With the success of his recent feature-length films, Satoshi Kon has emerged as one of the top anime directors not named Hayao Miyazaki. “Paprika” is a masterful addition to his body of work and would be a welcome addition to any collection.
