After two years as a software engineer, Cynthia Shih left her job in order to pursue her musical dreams. Though her departure was a loss for the computer industry, music fans rejoiced. Shih, who’s better known as Vienna Teng, returns with her unique blend of poignant lyrics, angelic vocals and intricate piano instrumentals in her third album, Dreaming Through The Noise. This album features a wider range of sounds, as compared to her previous albums, as Teng dabbles into different genres. Also, the supporting instruments play a larger role, creating a richer timbre than her previous CDs. The album opens with “Blue Caravan,” a haunting song which showcases Teng’s poetic storytelling at its best. She’s accompanied by an echoing horn, soft, galloping percussions, harmonious strings and a steady bass that ties them all together. “Nothing Without You” is sweet song that features a calm, melodic piano accompanied by Teng’s soothing voice. This song more closely fits the style Teng’s fans have come to love. “I Don’t Feel So Well” is a deviation from the rest of the songs on the album. The song has a slight uneasy feel to it, as foreshadowed by the title of the song. Though it’s weaker than most of the other songs in terms of lyrical content, what makes the song stand out is its assortment of musical solos, including one from an accordion. Dreaming Through The Noise is a testament to Vienna Teng’s growth as a musician. Where many artists become stuck inside a certain genre, Teng expands her range and the result is a more comprehensive and aesthetically pleasing sound. >> continue to The Infuser Joe Nguyen is the editor in chief for asiaXpress.com.
