| 'The
model immigrant' Joe Nguyen, staff writer March 6, 2006 “I'm not Asian, I'm American for goodness' sake.” According to newsmax.com, that’s what Michelle Malkin told radio host Steve Malzberg back in 2004.
What difference a year and a newly-released book make. When Malkin and Dinesh D’Souza came to speak at Boulder on Wednesday, I was trying to think of something new to write, something that hasn’t been said a thousand times over. These two controversial figures have made a lot of enemies over the years and many of them are quite outspoken. When the end was coming, I thought to myself, “Maybe I should just write about the Oscars.” Then, I heard this: "I don’t know if you realize how much courage it takes for Michelle to take the positions that she did,” D'Souza said, “particularly as an immigrant.” My ears instantly lit up, as did Malkin’s. You see, our dear Mrs. Malkin isn't an immigrant. She was born in Philadelphia, as it says so in her blog entry here. I’m not a history buff, but I’m pretty sure Philadelphia has remained a part of the United States over the last 36 years. I don’t recall the city being seceded from the Union on or around Oct. 20, 1970. "I want to publicly commend her for not only for her elegance, but also for her incredible courage," D'Souza said. "In this sense, she is the model immigrant. I wish that some more native-born Americans had the same fortitude as Michelle." The audience wildly cheered these comments. Instead of correcting him, Malkin was lovey-dovey and showered him with her own complements. As much time as this woman has put in denouncing her “Asian-ness” to combat those who label her as a race traitor, it was amusing to see her accepting the label of an immigrant. That’s right, throw away your integrity to appease the masses and continue the perpetual foreigner stereotype while you're at it. Makes perfect sense as long as your book sells.
