CAPSA
Presents Hereandnow This past Saturday on the DU campus, CAPSA presented the Hereandnow Theater Company, an Asian-American acting troupe from Los Angeles. They performed in front of a packed audience that included students from all across Colorado.
The show was a combination of drama and comedy, sadness and laughter. The skits were entertaining while also bringing up some social issues that affect the Asian community. The performance began slightly after 7:30 PM with the cast members bringing various people from the audience onstage to play a game of hand pushing and “Red light, green light.” The skits that followed were very entertaining. The story about the grandpa put in the back shed was hilarious. Lloyd Lee, who played the grandson, had so much energy running around the auditorium; you honestly believed that he was a little kid.
Quite possibly the most powerful skit was the one about the high school senior, played by Daniel Le, that got killed while he was with his prom date. The audience was in dead silence when he was killed by the two thugs. This was a very good show. Whether the audience was laughing or in tears, one thing was for sure, it left everyone thinking. I learned something from this at least: “The good thing about being Asian is that if you lower your car, you look taller.” Hereandnow is a compelling Asian American theatre company that has performed across the nation for the past 12 years. Hereandnow uses the collective voices of its diverse cast to reach out to the audience through universal themes of the show: that everyone comes from a unique experience, and that all people have stories to share.
