Taste
of Asia Boulder, CO – On April 19, Asian Unity, a student organization based out of CU-Boulder, hosted their first annual Taste of Asia festival on Farrand Field in the middle of campus. Fellow Asian student groups (AAPAC, KASB, VSAB, Aloha Club, ISA, HKSA, JSA, Asian Interest Sorority, HSA, SASA, and CSSA) served food from their respective cultures as well as presented various performances throughout the sunny day.
A crowd of over 1000 teachers, students, and other various people from around the community arrived at the event. The festivities kicked off with the Shaolin Hung Mei Pei Kung Fu school performing a lion dance. This was followed by a dance performance from the South Asian Student Association. The Aloha Club then performed various hula dances followed by several songs that were performed by the Denver Taiko Group.
A fashion show featuring the students, including yours truly, was shown. The various students wore traditional garments from their respective countries as a short history of the clothes was being relayed to the audience. In years past, Asian Unity held an annual Asian Culture Night during this time to showcase the various cultures on campus. They changed it to the Taste of Asia this year because it was felt that the community’s needs weren’t being fully reached. It was a fun event as everyone left with full stomachs and a better understanding of these Asian cultures in America.
