Former Philippine Senator Nikki Coseteng Promotes Book
February 23, 2002

Former Philippine Senator Nikki Coseteng is touring the US to introduce and promote the book Sinaunang Habi, Philippine Ancestral Weave, written by Marian Pastor Roces and published by Ms. Coseteng. Tess and Les Nelson, owners of Island Teak, Cherry Creek Shopping Center, Denver, were the gracious hosts of Ms. Coseteng

On February 8, the Filipino American Community of Colorado (FACC) and the Philippine/Asian American Times jointly sponsored the book signing event. The Philippine Rondalla of Denver entertained the guests on this occasion.

On February 9, the book signing coincided with the Valentine Ball for FACC members. Both events were held at the FACC Cultural Center.

Ms Coseteng, considered an art expert, was once a curator and gallery owner. She was at the forefront of advocacy work to recognize the value of culture in enhancing appreciation of the difference and the participation of women in the national development. She hosted "Woman's Watch" for nine years, a weekly tele-magazine show that focused on women's issues. By publishing and promoting "Sinaunang Habi" a comprehensive, well-researched and colorful book about the weaving tradition of the indigenous women of the Philippines, she hopes to preserve a vanishing art form.

The book published, in full color, is a scholarly work, a beautiful discovery and revival of Philippine textiles, the art of weaving by Filipino women.

Ms. Coseteng spoke passionately about Filipino culture, identity, and pride and how Filipinos and Filipino Americans should preserve them. One way is through owning and reading books such as this.

One comment is quoted here: The Book is an accomplishment: first class quality. The writer and photographers are the most respected people in their fields. It is a valuable collection in print about the Philippine culture that every Filipino should have. Comment by: Nelfa Querubin-Tompkins, artist , Golden, Colorado.
