On Saturday, March 17th, Colorado Asian Pacific Student Alliance (CAPSA) held another successful basketball tournament. This year the tournament was held at the University of Colorado-Boulder Recreation Center.
The returning champions from last year, the Hi-Fi Mo Fos (HFMF), last year known as Denver Boys, came back this year to again shoot their way to another outstanding victory. The team consisted of: Phong Ly, Son Ly, Cuong Ly, Khai Bui, John Nguyen, John Phi, Kim Phi, Tuan Nguyen. The championship game was between team HFMF and Charlie (Peter Chen, Vinh Huynh, Shawn Huynh, Mark Tang, Nelson Huang, Steve Tran, Nam Hoang). Both teams played extremely well and showed good sportsmanship. The game was supported by many of the teams that have already played. Cheers were accepted by both teams as they demonstrated their court skills. At the end of the 8-hour tournament, first place walked away with the $200 prize and second place was rewarded with $100. Another team worth mentioning would be the asiaXpress team, who came back this year stronger and tougher. This basketball tournament was only one of the many fundraisers that CAPSA holds for the APA community. The basketball tournament helped fundraise for the 2nd Annual Colorado Asian Pacific Student Conference: "Past, Future, Present…." The conference-planned for April 27, 2001- hopes to bring together Asian Pacific American (APA) high schools students to a one-day conference with speakers and experts on certain issues in the APA community. Topics for the workshops will be: Asian: Past, Future and Present; Exploitation of Asian American in the Media; Racial Profiling; Drug Usage and the Rave Scene; Violence; Pride and Prejudice; and Identity. Please visit www.capsaonline.org or e-mail us at denver_capsa@hotmail.com for more information about the conference. This annual basketball tournament hopes to grow each year and bring together the Asian community in a more active manner-sports! |
